    Funchal
    Funchal, the capital of Madeira, lies on the southern coast of the island. It is an important commercial and fishing port as well as a well-known climatic health resort. The city was founded in 1421 by João Gonçalves Zarco and received its town charter in 1508. Funchal is famous for its wine industry. The climate is subtropical, with mild winters (19-20°C) and warm summers (26°C). The best time to visit is summer, when the temperature reaches 26°C. Cristiano Ronaldo was born in Funchal, as was Vânia Fernandes.
