Air Namibia

Air Namibia was established in 1946. In 1949 they began operating flights between Windhoek and Grootfontein, becoming a member of IATA 10 years later. From 2017, they gained an appropriate certificate, which allowed for connections with any European Union country.

Air Namibia mainly operated domestic and local flights. With this carrier you could fly from Namibia to: Angola, Botswana, Ghana, Nigeria, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Flights outside of Africa included routes to the United Kingdom and Germany. They also had a permit to fly to the United States.

Air Namibia – baggage

The baggage policy at Air Namibia seemed a bit complicated since there were many different guidelines that varied depending on the class and route.

Hand baggage in Air Namibia

Passengers travelling with this airline could bring hand baggage on board. For children and babies, you had to pay at least 50% of the adult baggage fee, but they were entitled to the same size baggage. Babies sitting on their parents’ lap could carry baggage with a maximum weight of 23 kilograms and a pram or child restraint.

Dimensions of adult baggage in the economy class:

  • 1 piece, maximum weight 10 kg, maximum dimensions 56x36x23 cm, additionally a small purse or small laptop

Dimensions of adult baggage in the business class:

  • 2 pieces with a maximum weight of 10 kg each, maximum dimensions 56x36x23 cm, additionally a small purse or small laptop

Checked baggage at Air Namibia

In the case of flights between Europe and Namibia, business class travellers could bring two pieces of checked baggage with a maximum weight of 32 kg and a total size of 158 cm.

In economy class you were entitled to one checked baggage with a maximum weight of 30 kg and total dimensions of 158 cm.

For local and African flights, baggage guidelines were variable. For example, for connections between West and South Africa in business class you were entitled to the same baggage as for a flight to Europe, but in economy class you could only bring luggage with a maximum weight of 23 kilograms.

Baggage for domestic flights

The dimensions of luggage in domestic flights also differed depending on. . . the model of the aircraft that operated the connection. All information is available on the carrier’s website. However, the standard rule was 32 kilograms in business class and 23 kilograms in economy class. In some cases, each traveller was entitled to one piece of baggage, in other two, even in economy class. If you are not certain yet how you will travel around Africa or Namibia, it is safest to assume that checked baggage will not exceed 23 kg and that you should only bring one piece.

Air Namibia – booking classes

It follows from the above paragraph that there were two classes in Air Namibia: economic and business. The latter is privileged in terms of carrying baggage - each traveller could bring 2 pieces of hand baggage and 2 pieces of checked baggage (not including some domestic flights).

In addition to the baggage privilege, the economy class also provided greater travel comfort - comfortable armchairs and high-quality meals. However, the business class looked different on long-haul flights and on short, local flights. The first one definitely provides more comfort compared to seats in the economy class.

Air Namibia – online check-in

You could check in online before flying with Air Namibia. This could be done at least 24 hours or at the latest 90 minutes before the scheduled flight.

Air Namibia had 10 aircrafts:

  • Airbus A319-100

Additional information

Not every airline allows the transport of pets, but Air Namibia belongs to those in which animals could be transported in most cases. Similarly to baggage, there were different regulations for individual directions.

On the Frankfurt - Windhoek route, you could transport a cat or dog with a maximum weight of 32 kilograms, and the fees for this service vary between 125 and 200 euros. It is about 2 times cheaper to travel with animals around Namibia.
