Istanbul Airport is one of the most modern and largest airports in the world, located 35 km north of the centre of Istanbul. The purpose of building a new facility in Turkey was to take over air traffic from Istanbul Atatürk airport, which had been one of the busiest airports in Europe till April 2019.
The project of building Istanbul New Airport has been divided into 4 stages, the airport will ultimately have 4 terminals and 6 runways. As announced, the port will be able to operate 3000 flights a day, and close to the terminal will be a special space enabling the simultaneous stopover of 114 planes. The capacity of Istanbul New Airport will be between 150 and 200 million passengers per year. The airport will be used by over 100 airlines, including Turkish Airlines. The completion of the construction process is planned for 2028. The first phase of the project was completed in 2018 - the main terminal and two runways were opened.
On April 6, 2019, Istanbul Airport took over all passenger traffic which had previously been handled by Istanbul Atatürk Airport.
