In the Bouguenais region, there is a French International airport Nantes located 8 km southwest of Nantes Downtown area. The airport was opened in 1928, initially, it was used for military purposes. During World War Two it was occupied by Germany. After the war, the airport was returned to the French air force, and from 1951 it was used to service civilian flights. Today, Nantes is one of the largest airports in the west of France. It is used by regular and cheap airlines.
Annually, the airport handles over 4.3 million passengers a year.
