Port Louis
Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius, lies on the Indian Ocean and has around 156 thousand inhabitants. It is the country's largest city, dominated by its port and foreign trade. Tourism plays an important role, and the Caudan Waterfront complex draws visitors with its many shops and the Blue Penny Museum. The National Library, with its rich historical collections, is well worth a visit. Founded by the French in 1735, the city also delights with the historic Aapravasi Ghat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ideal time to visit is the winter months, when temperatures are more pleasant.
